Elephant Rocks
A short drive from Oamaru through the rolling countryside of North Otago are the evocative Elephant Rocks. Located near Duntroon, as you drive through the area you are going back through millions of years of geological history along a road that is known as the “Valley of the Whales”—in fact, this area is dotted with ancient marine fossils since this whole area was once under water. The Elephant Rocks were formed by rushing water as the landscape emerged from the sea millennia ago, and now offer the visitor a stunning landscape to wander around, marveling at the power of nature.
