Waitaki Whitestone Geopark
The unique geography of the Waitaki District has given rise to its status as an aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark, the first of its kind in Australasia. From the Moeraki Boulders past the Elephant Rocks via the evocative “Valley of the Whales” to the Clay Cliffs, there are nearly 50 significant sites to visit throughout the region. Centred in the small town of Duntroon, 30 minutes from Oamaru, the visitor centre there can provide a good overview of the Geopark, along with exhibits of some of the amazing fossils that have been found in the area.
