Truth be told, our favourite time of year in Oamaru and the Waitaki is autumn and winter. The crowds of international visitors are gone, leaving the breathtaking scenery and amazing sights uncrowded and unhurried. Plus the weather is much less capricious and often bestows cloudless blue skies and comfortable, crisp temperatures that make the travelling that much more pleasant. And when you return to the lodge in the evening to find the fires burning, you can curl up and relax with a glass of local wine (or a beverage of your choosing).
